Remidio Fundus on Phone
The journey of Remidio began as an exploratory collaboration with Anand Sivaraman to develop an all new, affordable retinal imaging device. The project involved rethinking the fundamentals and building entirely new concepts from the ground up. Addressing the imaging challenge through innovative optical design led to the development of a core platform that became Remidio’s first intellectual property.
Multiple design iterations were carried out, with each stage validated through continuous engagement with users and clinicians. Feedback-driven refinements in optics and product design ensured that the solution evolved to meet real-world clinical and operational requirements.
The outcome of this effort was the development of FOP, a retinal imaging platform that is significantly more efficient and cost-effective than conventional retinal imaging systems, while maintaining high image quality. Its versatility allows deployment in eye camps and resource-constrained settings with limited access to power and trained personnel. The device operates on battery power, and images are captured using a smartphone, enabling seamless collaboration with specialists for remote opinion and diagnosis. Today, the product is regarded as an industry benchmark in the handheld retinal imaging category.
The project also established a new approach to innovation for the founding team—one centered on first-principles thinking, iterative validation, and user-driven development. The same philosophy continues to guide the development of subsequent projects and technologies.
